Crow Lotus Garden

CrowLotusCombining styles of roji  露地, a teagarden, and kaiyū-shiki-teien 回遊式庭園 a stroll garden, this private landscape side steps tradition by embracing a more naturalistic aesthetic. Plants are less formally manicured as in most Japanese gardens, embracing a wild, unkempt look. This treatment is less idealized than tradition dictates, but more closely aligns with my own predisposition.

Very much a work in progress, my wife and I began landscaping the empty rectangle of our rear yard when we purchased our home in 2008. Initially we started working in an English cottage garden style, but these elemets gave way to an East-Asian aesthetic about two years into the project.

Primary elements of the garden are the chashitsu  茶室 (teahouses) and other structures. Keeping in mind that this garden is located in a suburban area, several design allowances have been made that reflect sensitivity to neighbors.
